Week in Review and Notable Performers 11/22-11/28

Gemologist winning the Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2).  Photo: Horsephotos.com

A busy Holiday weekend gave us four new juvenile graded stakes winners. Gemologist emerged as the horse with the most buzz of the group based on his similarities to 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver.  They not only share the same owner/trainer combo, but also were victorious in the two-turn Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs// Dale Romans is excited with his Remsen (G2) winner O’Prado Again, and thinks the more distance the better// So Brilliant captured the one-turn Hollywood Prevue and will attempt to stretch out in the CashCall Futurity (G1) in three weeks//  Outside of the graded stakes, there were also other intriguing juvenile races, particular at the Churchill Downs “Stars of Tomorrow” card Saturday.  CTD NP Brown Eyed Jozi romped in an allowance and King Kid impressed in his first try// There’s a fantastic article by Gary West, who now contributes to ESPN.com, on promising early juveniles and their quest for the roses// Holiday shopping is in full swing.  Be sure to pick up a calendar for the horseplayer in the family.

Graded Stakes Review:

Kentucky Jockey Club (G2)
Winner: Gemologist NP
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Trainer: Todd Trainer
Chart: Equibase
Video: YouTube
Beyer/BRIS: 85/94
Wrap-up Articles: Bloodhorse / DRF / Courier Journal / Brisnet / AP

Notes:

-Gemologist was very professional in his third start, sitting just off the pace and making a perfect timed move in the stretch.

-Pletcher intimated a “similar path” to Super Saver’s will be utilized but whether that means just two preps or also the Tampa and Arkansas Derbys remains to be seen.

-Gemologist was bought for $310,000 weanling and should relish added distance. His catalog page can be viewed here

-What an effort from Ever So Lucky.  Wheeled back in two weeks off of his debut, given a 5-furlong breeze 3 days before, and being pressured on the lead throughout the race it was amazing he hung on for as long as he did.  His future appears to be just as bright as the winner.

-3rd place Timely Tally made a great late charge as did 4th place Optimizer who had to come around the final turn four wide.

Winner: O’Prado Again NP
Jockey: Kent Desormeaux
Trainer: Dale Romans
Chart: Equibase
Video: YouTube
Beyer/BRIS: 80/90
Wrap-up Articles: Bloodhorse / DRF / NYRA / Brisnet

-The winner seemed to catch a second and third wind at various times of the race, finally using a late burst in the final furlong to win.

-Desormeaux compared O’Prado Again to 2000 Kentucky Derby winner Fushaichi Pegasus.

-Romans says he will take the Gulfstream route to the Derby in the Spring, but before the end of the year could end up in the CashCall Futurity. Let’s hope he takes a break and stays fresh for the Spring.

-O’Prado again was a $300,000 purchase and his catalog page is here

-El Padrino and Done Talking poured it on late but missed.  Souper Speedy hung on for 2nd, but really had a perfect trip to steal this one.

Hollywood Prevue (G3)
Winner: So Brilliant
Jockey: Martin Garcia
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Chart: Equibase
Video: YouTube
Beyer/BRIS: 82/93

-Winner will point to CashCall Futurity along with stablemate Liaison, winner of the Real Quiet Stakes.

-Distance was not an issue for So Brilliant’s sire Medaglia d’Oro who was a grade one winner at 10 furlongs. So Brilliant’s dam was a stakes winner at 8.5 furlongs (turf)

-So Brilliant was a $300,00 purchase and his catalog page can be viewed here

-Not much separated So Brilliant and Brother Francis at the wire. The latter had to go four wide.

Generous S. (G3)
Winner: Stoney Fleece
Jockey: Joel Rosario
Trainer: John Sadler
Chart: Equibase
Video: YouTube
Wrap-up Articles: Bloodhorse /
Beyer/BRIS: 83/95

Notes:

-Sadler hinted he might look at restricted stakes on the main course for Stoney Fleece as opposed to staying on grass.  That could lead the way to a try on the Derby trail in the early part of next year, but it’s unlikely.

-Stoney Fleece was only a $1200 purchase. His catalog page can be seen here

Graded Earnings List

Notable Performer:

Reveron

King Kid
11/26/11 Churchill Downs Maiden Special Weight
Jockey: Corey Lanerie
Trainer: Dale Romans
Chart: Equibase
Beyer/BRIS: 68/89

Notes:

-King Kid stayed off the quick pace in the early going and used the outside/middle of the stretch to win.

-Will be shipped to Gulfstream this week.

-Son of Lemon Drop Kid should like stretch-out in distance. Dam was a stakes winner and won on dirt and turf at 8.5 furlongs.

-$35,000 purchase at Keeneland September Yearling sale. Catalog page here

-The light bulb went on for Desert Storm late in the race as he made an impressive dash to the wire to finish third.

Week In Review and Notable Perfomers 11/14-11/20

Like it or not, the quirky Delta Downs Jackpot (G3) plays a part in determining the following year’s Kentucky Derby field. Sabercat, the winner of Saturday’s million dollar contest, is guaranteed a spot in the gate.  Second-place runner Basmati has a very good shot as well seeing as he cashed in $200K in graded earnings// Three graded races this week in Hollywood, New York, and Louisville.  Links to pps, past race videos, and articles can be found on the upcoming page here. Interesting that Hollywood Prevue (G3) entrant Empire Way is down to 60-1 odds in the latest Kentucky Derby Wynn Las Vegas Future Book.  Seeing as he only has a decent maiden win to his credit, being a full brother to Breeders’ Cup winner Royal Delta is a major factor in the backing// Majestic City will rest a little before returning to synthetic in the Cashcall Futurity (G1).  Lucky Chappy, another colt who tried the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last time out, will also try the Futurity// Three-time Kentucky Derby winning trainer Nick Zito is getting the fever early again with promising maiden winner Casual Trick. Although the winning Beyer speed figure was low, plenty of colts have won first time out with a low 60 Beyer and steadily improved towards May…

Graded Stakes Review:

Delta Downs Jackpot (G3)
Winner: Sabercat NP
Jockey: Gerard Melancon
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Chart: Equibase
Video: YouTube
Beyer/BRIS: NA/86
Wrap-up articles: Bloodhorse / DRF1 DRF2 / Thoroughbred Times

Sabercat Notes:

-The manner the race unfolded, the final time, and the low speed figures are not really worthy of a “Notable Performer” tag.  Nonetheless, winning a million dollar graded race and being assured a spot in the Kentucky Derby gate by November are reason enough to put on the list.

-Will ship to Santa Anita for a likely west-coast campaign

-$120,000 Sept Keeneland yearling purchase. His catalog page can be viewed here

-Half brother to a stakes winner out of a dam who was a half sister to a graded stakes winner

Other Delta Jackpot Notes:

-Hard to tell exactly what Drill’s issue is—blinkers, running style, dirt—but whatever it is he’s a mess right now

-2nd Place finisher Basmati holds his own in every contest, but has a difficult time winning

Notable Performer:

How Do I Win
11/18/11 Aqueduct Starter Allowance
Jockey: John Velazquez
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Chart: Equibase
Beyer/BRIS: 78/91

Notes:

-An eye-popping 19-length winner last time out, How Do I Win proved that effort was not a fluke due to a sealed track

-Repole/Pletcher connections

-$190,000 Keeneland September Yearling purchase. Catalog page can be viewed here

-Sire Corinthian won up to 8.5 furlongs, but excelled at 8 furlongs.

-Dam is half sister to multiple graded stakes winner Powerful Punch (up to 9 furlongs)

Week In Review 11/7 - 11/13 & Notable Performers

As the Breeders’ Cup page turns, it appears time for Kentucky Derby hype to begin on any impressive 2-year-old maiden breaker. This past week there were three colts that generated such buzz and none broke a mid-80 Beyer speed figure. Nonetheless, they’re notable// Consortium led the charge, with an impressive 4 3/4 length victory that catapulted him to 50-1 odds on the Wynn Las Vegas Kentucky Derby Future Book// Empire Way, a full brother to Royal Delta won at first asking, even though trainer Mike Harrington said he wouldn’t// Ever So Lucky lived up to his buzz and $600,000 price tag, but once again we have an Indian Charlie colt that comes with distance questions// The $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot is Saturday.  Whether it’s justified or not, the winner (and most likely runner-up) is guaranteed a start on the first Saturday in May.

Notable Performers

Hierro
11/9/11 Churchill Downs Maiden Special Weight
Jockey: Julien Leparoux
Trainer: Steven Asmussen
Chart: Equibase
Video: YouTube
Beyer/BRIS: 85/94

Heavily bet in his third start, Hierro supported his backers and appeared to finally put it all together in a professional effort on the Churchill strip.

Tracking just off the pacesetters, jockey Julien Leparoux kept tight wraps on the colt who appeared eager to go from the start.  Finally loosening the reigns into the final turn, Hierro appeared to be gliding effortlessly down the stretch to win by over five lengths in a final time of 1:23.65 for seven furlongs.

Trainer Steve Asmussen said the colt will likely prep for the Classics on the Southern California circuit.

Hierro is by freshman sire Hard Spun, who has already proven to be a successful sire of precocious 2-year-olds.  He’s out of a graded stakes placed dam and a half brother to multiple stakes winner Cherokee Triangle who excels on turf and won at distances up to 8.5 furlongs.  His catalog page can be viewed here.

Consortium

11/12/11 Aqueduct Maiden Special Weight
Jockey: Alan Garcia
Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin
Chart: Equibase
Video: YouTube
Beyer/BRIS: 79/88
Articles: New York Watch: Consortium (NYRA)

Consortium, a 13-1 shot entered in a maiden contest at Aqueduct Saturday, garnered little buzz before the gates opened.  That all changed once he crossed the wire ahead of the rest of the field by nearly 5 lengths.

It was a quick and perfect break from the start for Consortium who soon settled behind a 4-pack of pacesetters in the early going.  Alan Garcia kept the colt on the outside and soon asked for run just before the stretch.  It was easy from there on as Garcia pulled up on the colt several lengths before the line.

Consortium is regally bred by champion Bernardini, out of a graded stakes winning dam at 9 furlongs. He’s owned by Darley, but apparently will stay in the States for a three-year-old campaign in New York or Florida.
