The first week of the New Year was
highlighted by the inaugural running of the Gulfstream Park Derby. CTD NP
Reveron was able to hold off a game Casual Trick. Full recap and video below// Trainer Mike Maker turned up
the heat for Hansen’s second work since the layoff. The Breeders’ Cup winner blitzed four furlongs in 48:60// The
grade 3 Sham Stakes kicks the Derby prep season into high gear at Santa Anita
Saturday. Breeders’ Cup Sprint champion Secret Circle will lead the cast// The
Count Fleet stakes at Aqueduct, also on Saturday, offers an intriguing field
despite the race being ungraded// Apparently Majestic City will
not be pointed to the Kentucky Derby and instead will get time off. While this is most likely true, let’s
not forget trainer Peter Miller also said Comma To The Top would skip the Derby
last year, before contracting a case of Derby Fever weeks before the race// Isn’t
He Clever, a dominant winner of the Riley Allison Futurity last Friday, posted
a 97 Beyer for that effort. It
will be interesting to see whether or not his connections decide to leave him
on the Sunland circuit or try to get graded earnings sooner rather than later…

Article: Casual
Trick impresses Zito in Gulfstream Park Derby (DRF)
Notes and Thoughts:
-Zito admitted it was ambitious to move
Casual Trick up to a two turn stakes off a maiden win
-Very game down the stretch but couldn’t
catch the stubborn winner
-$425K purchase at the Keeneland September
Yearling sale. Catalog page here
-Distance should not be an issue for the
son of Bernardini who is out of a Group 1 winning mare at the Derby distance of
1 1/4 miles
-Same owner/trainer combo as last year’s
Kentucky Derby favorite Dialed In, and 2010 runner-up Ice Box
-Zito looking for another two-turn race at
Gulfstream before Fountain Of Youth (G2), but it will not be Holy Bull (G3)
