Creative Cause, Mark Valeski go quick in final moves// 3 others breeze// Monday notes, sights, and sounds from the backside

Kentucky Derby contender Mark Valeski with trainer Larry Jones- Photo: CTD

Happy Derby week! With 5 days to go until the Run For The Roses the buzz and drama along the backstretch is amping up. A majority of the likely Derby field has now settled into the stable areas.  On Monday, five contenders put in their final works ahead of Saturday’s race, with the most drama occurring around the barn of Larry Jones.  The trainer is still undecided on whether to enter Mark Valeski and will not make the final decision until Wednesday morning when he gets the opportunity to take the colt for a spin around Churchill. Mark Valeski had the bullet move Monday going 5-furlongs, but apparently his gallop out was virtually non-existent.  According to Jones that’s par for the course// Creative Cause flew through a quick 4-furlongs. He was visibly sweating, but seemed eager to go on// Bob Baffert was extremely pleased with Liaison’s first breeze on the Churchill Downs surface and said it was his best work since just before the CashCall Futurity (G1) win in December. DRF’s Mike Welsch wasn’t over the moon with the work from his 6th floor view, and said it was merely average// Steve Asmussen’s pair Sabercat and Daddy Nose Best breezed earlier in the day, with the latter getting special mention from Welsch.  For videos and reports from today’s works see below// Daddy Long Legs apparently drilled Sunday at Ballydoyle in Ireland.  Trainer Aidan O’Brien called it “routine” which doesn’t give us much compared to the daily analysis we get on the Churchill workers// Jockey Willie Martinez joked that speed ball Trinniberg will sit last in the early stages of the Derby before making his big move.  In all seriousness, he did mention they don’t have to be on the lead due to the horse’s tactical speed// Doug O’Neill seemed excited to be back for the Derby. It doesn’t hurt that he trains Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner I’ll Have Another, who made a great appearance on the track. O’Neill had to answer quite a few questions about the shockwave therapy the colt recently underwent.  The trainer actually brought a chiropractor along for the trip to Kentucky, and he was getting as much attention from the press as the trainer// An always intriguing read is Kerry Thomas’ assessment of contenders emotional conformation profiles.  The emotional profile basically tells you how a horse responds among a herd. Last year he pegged Derby winner Animal Kingdom and favorite Dialed In as having nearly perfect profiles.  This year he claims there are 8 that fit the profile in 2012, with Union Rags, I’ll Have Another, and Went the Day Well on top// I can’t pinpoint it exactly, but it’s always amusing to see Mine That Bird’s trainer Chip Wooley hanging around on the backside on Derby week.  The trainer seems to not have a care in the world and clearly enjoys the attention. He sides with Take Charge Indy this year, but thinks Bodemeister is the one to beat// more…

Catching up...

I’m catching up with a lot of the weekend goings on. Here are some notes:

Alpha: Still no word on who the rider will be. Rajiv Maragh appears to be the favorite seeing as he worked Alpha on Sunday, but Kiaran McLaughlin put on his dancing shoes when asked for a commitment.

Gemologist/El Padrino- Todd Pletcher’s plan to keep his Derby contenders in Florida due to supposed better weather clearly backfired. Gemologist had the better work of the two in the muddy conditions, although Pletcher said he wasn’t looking for much from either colt.

Union Rags- Mike Welsch from DRF believes he’s sitting on his best race based on Saturday’s work.  Lots of talk about how washy the colt appears when he’s out on the track, but those that are familiar with him in the mornings know it’s normal.

Bodemeister- Consensus seems to be that while Union Rags stole the show Saturday, it was all about Bodemeister on Sunday. His daily routine gallops on the track did not impress, but he was a different mover Saturday.

Prospective- Welsch likes as long shot pick in Derby.

Went the Day Well- worked with blinkers and was much more focused and game.

Dullahan- Welsch thinks it appears synthetic surfaces are more suited for him. I have seen Dullahan gallop multiple times along the backstretch, and he seems to be moving very well over the surface.

Kentucky Derby pace (And Down The Stretch They Come)

Take Charge Indy apparently “magnificent” in work// Union Rags arrives at Churchill// Alpha gets more gate training

It’s harder to get a good read on Kentucky Derby contender workouts when they don’t take place at Churchill Downs.  Usually you’re left with the opinion from one clocker and an always confident trainer. That’s the case with Take Charge Indy’s 5 furlong official move at Palm Meadows Thursday.  Aside from trainer Patrick Bryne noting he went a little too fast, he labeled the work “magnificent” and “couldn’t have gone any better”.  The Palm Meadows clocker mentioned Take Charge Indy was sharp and in hand.  The breeze was his final pre-Derby work, and the colt will fly to Louisville on Tuesday with Todd Pletcher’s contingent// Alpha continues to get some training in at Belmont.  The son of Bernardini took part in gate training Thursday, which is important considering his past issues with becoming highly worked up in close quarters. Alpha is set to breeze Saturday and then fly to Louisville on Monday// I’m late to the party, but just read all the handicapping installments from Rich Nilsen on the A Game of Skill Blog. I’ve linked parts 1-6 below and it’s worth checking out his list of contenders, borderlines, and throwouts. Note his posting on Alpha was before it was revealed the colt had an infection and missed some training time// Union Rags arrived at Churchill Downs Thursday. See below for video of the arrival, an interview with trainer Michael Matz, and a blog post by jockey Julien Leparoux// Nice short video interview with Dale Romans from the Courier Journal. He claims he’s more relaxed than past Derbies and explains what it would mean to win the hometown race.

If you’re in Louisville next Tuesday try to stop by Molly Malone’s Irish Pub on Baxter Avenue. They’re holding a benefit for Second Stride, which is a non-profit organization that provides rehabilitation, re-training, and placement for retired racehorses.  Entry is just $10 and there will be auctions for racing memorabilia and other prizes with all proceeds going to the organization. For more info go here.

Isn’t He Clever out, Optimizer next in line// Liaison urged through 6 furlongs// Speculation on I’ll Have Another

Isn’t He Clever was officially declared out of the Kentucky Derby by trainer Steve Asmussen Wednesday. His spot at #21 on the graded earnings list now belongs to D. Wayne Lukas’ Optimizer.  If he were to make the field, Optimizer would represent the trainer’s 45th starter. A win would not only be surprising to just about everyone, but would also make the trainer the oldest to ever claim the Roses// Liaison was the lone worker Wednesday at Churchill Downs. The Bob Baffert trainee was urged through 6 furlongs by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan.  DRF’s clocker Mike Welsch was not impressed with the move, but noted Baffert insists the colt is never strong in the mornings. The Grade 1 winner won’t have many backers heading into the Kentucky Derby and with good reason.  His 3-year-old form has been worse than sub-par, and not only was his best racing during his juvenile campaign but also on the synthetic surface at Hollywood Park// Welsch did like the energy level of Prospective from his morning gallop at Churchill and also thought Dullahan was covering ground well.  Both colts are tentatively scheduled for their final pre-Derby workouts this Saturday, but that could change depending on weather// It was reported by the Paulick Report that Santa Anita Derby winner I’ll Have Another was recently placed on the vet list due to shockwave therapy.  Trainer Doug O’Neil said the colt has undergone the therapy on his back before and doesn’t see it being an issue for the Derby// A minority interest of potential Derby favorite Bodemeister was sold to Southern Equine’s Mike and Tiffany Moreno Wednesday// A healthy list of articles and blog postings are linked with coverage on Daddy Long Legs, Gemologist, Dullahan, Derby tips, historical data, musings, and more.  Plus, Bodemeister joins a finally updated CTD Top 5…

Liaison gets green light for Derby, Garcia to ride// Opinions mixed on Bodemeister work// Creative Cause goes 5

Most morning workouts are viewed closely by a clocker, trainer, and occasional owner.  You can add a reporter or two when it comes to stakes caliber horses.  However, the viewer and critic pool grows exponentially when a possible Kentucky Derby favorite breezes less than two weeks from the country’s biggest horserace- especially with the help of Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. Reaction from Bodemeister’s 5 furlong workout at Churchill Downs Tuesday ranged from “nice” “solid”, “good, not great” and “terrible”. Trainer Bob Baffert probably put things in perspective the best when he reminded everyone the colt is only 10 days past the biggest effort of his life in the Arkansas Derby and they weren’t looking to push him. Bodemeister will put in a final work ahead of the Derby either Sunday or Monday// Creative Cause, another top flight Derby contender, worked at Hollywood Park Tuesday without blinkers and will not race with them in the Derby. According to regular jockey Joel Rosario, Creative Cause relaxes more without the equipment. Creative Cause is tentatively scheduled to work at Churchill Downs next Tuesday.  For today’s workout times, video, and reports see the links below// Baffert was also on-hand to watch Liaison train on the Churchill surface.  He claimed the colt moved much better on the Louisville track than Santa Anita, where he finished out of the money in his last three races.  With that vote of confidence, Liaison was confirmed for the Kentucky Derby, where he could be one of the highest prices on the board. Martin Garcia gets the call to ride the son of Indian Charlie// All five workers from Monday; Daddy Nose Best, Sabercat, Mark Valeski, Isn’t He Clever, and Optimizer were in good order the next day// Julien Leparoux seems anxious to get in the starting gate with Union Rags in the Derby.  He’s put the much criticized ride in the Florida Derby behind him and has no concerns his mount will get the 10 furlong distance based on his strong gallop out from the race// The article list is growing every day as we get closer to the Derby.  See below for features on Daddy Nose Best, Union Rags, Derby trends, Derby pace, overseas odds, and more…
