Handicappers begin to weigh in on the weekend// Wood Memorial has 10 probables, 7 for Santa Anita Derby // Super Ninety Nine, Den’s Legacy back to work// Lukas duo works at Oaklawn// more

With all Florida Derby (G1) attention on the big three, it’s nice to see a piece on an entrant we don’t know much about. Jay Hovdey features Kentucky Derby winning trainer Barclay Tagg and maiden winner Indy’s Illusion, who let’s face it, has an extremely uphill battle on his hands Saturday// Handicapper picks and more feature stories are pouring in for both the Florida Derby and Louisiana Derby (G2). I’ve linked all of them below under the race headings// Super Ninety Nine, a horse that failed as the favorite in the Rebel (G2), had his first official breeze since that race. Trainer Bob Baffert says the Rebel was a “gutterball” performance, but as I’ve stated numerous times I think he had excuses with the outside post and pressure various times of the race. Super Ninety Nine is scheduled to race next in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) April 6th against stablemate Flashback as well as Hear the Ghost, Tiz a Minister, Goldencents, Power Broker, and Storm Fighter// D. Wayne Lukas’ two main Derby contenders worked at Oaklawn Thursday. Oxbow took an extended 6-furlong breeze while Will Take Charge stayed at 4 panels// The Wood Memorial (G1) April 6th has as many as 10 possible entrants for now, led by Verrazano and Vyjack// more…

Although Itsmyluckyday won the Holy Bull (G3) in track record fashion and was installed as the 2-1 favorite in Saturday’s Florida Derby (G1), headlines were dominated by Shanghai Bobby and his second consecutive draw on the rail. For those stories and others, plus PPs see below// Revolutionary gets the spotlight for the Louisiana Derby (G2) where he was made the 3-1 top choice of 14 entrants. PPs and previews can also be found below// For some reason the arrival of the first likely Kentucky Derby starter to Churchill Downs always gets the heart racing a little faster. It’s a real indicator that everything we love to experience in and around the Derby- morning workout reports, betting strategies and debates, owner/trainer/jockey drama, post position draw, the walkover, and eventual opening of the 20-horse gates- will all be here before you know it. Spiral (G3) winner Black Onyx is this year’s first arrival and following tradition I’ve included the annual cell phone picture from Churchill Downs media. The colt arrived early Wednesday morning and will hit the track Thursday// A well written piece about some of this Derby fever I speak of is on ESPN by Gary West and linked below// New rankings, workout details, and more…

Can Bobby go the distance?// More Florida Derby works// Kentucky Derby next for Govenor Charlie// Stevens gets mount on Oxbow// Updated Futures// more…

If Shanghai Bobby fails to give a convincing effort in Saturday’s Florida Derby (G1), get ready for critics to crawl out of the woodwork. There will be critics of the 2-year-old Champion’s distance capabilities, seeing as they already made noise after his defeat in the Holy Bull (G3)- a second place finish that not only registered high speed figures but came off a nearly three month layoff. There will also be critics of the new Kentucky Derby point system, seeing as Shanghai Bobby would likely not make the Kentucky Derby field with a finish outside the top four on Saturday. Yes, he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and was crowned 2-year-old Champion but would you really include him on any of your Derby tickets after a fifth or worse finish in the Florida Derby?// Below are Florida Derby stories on trainer Shug McGaughey and his quest to have a real Derby contender and hometown hero Eddie Plesa and his dreams with Itsmyluckyday. Two likely entrants breezed four furlongs Tuesday: Turf and synthetic runner Are You Kidding Me and maiden winner Pick of the Litter// As expected, dominating Sunland Derby (G3) winner Govenor Charlie will train straight up to the Kentucky Derby (G1) instead of squeezing in one more prep// It was announced Gary Stevens will ride Oxbow in the Arkansas Derby (G1) for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. The trainer said the horse belonged to Stevens all along and Mike Smith was just a substitute in the Rebel when Stevens was committed to ride at Santa Anita. That’s a little humorous seeing as Stevens has never ridden Oxbow in any of his eight career races// Looks like impressive Santa Anita maiden winner Summer Exclusive will stay off the Derby trail. Trainer Peter Miller didn’t like the end of his 7-furlong workout and feels the colt needs to stick to one turn for the time being. He will ship to Aqueduct for the Bay Shore (G3)// When I commented a few days ago that video production quality could easily be improved by some racing outlets, I didn’t really have in mind what Brisnet released on YouTube late Monday night. It’s different, I’ll give them that// more…

Orb ready for showdown with Bobby, Lucky// Bullet for Flashback// Louisiana Derby could be wide open// Late nominations// more…

Mike Welsch has a nice first-hand account of Orb’s final breeze ahead of Saturday’s Florida Derby (G1). He claims the colt was authoritative in the last strides of the four furlong work and barely came back blowing afterwards. The likely Florida Derby field has already swelled to nine horses from just three listed as probable two weeks ago. In addition to Orb and other headliners Shanghai Bobby and Itsmyluckyday, the field will probably include Frac Daddy, Pick of the Litter, Merit Man, Pontiff, Narvaez, and Are You Kidding Me// The Louisiana Derby (G2) figures to be a full field of 14, with the connections for Sunbean keeping their fingers crossed there are no surprise additions. Sunbean would push to the also-eligible list considering he’s only raced in Louisiana-bred restricted races. Departing is the other Al Stall Jr. possible Louisiana Derby prospect and will probably be among the favorites in the race. Revolutionary figures to be the top choice, along with stablemate Palace Malice taking a fair share of betting money as well. Dallas Stewart still believes in Golden Soul, a close 6th last time out in the Risen Star, and thinks added distance will help// Bob Baffert’s Flashback worked six panels at Santa Anita in the fastest time of 14 others, but it was still called “smooth”. Baffert said on the radio Monday that War Academy will likely head to the Arkansas Derby (G1) and Power Broker will join Flashback in the Santa Anita Derby (G1). The trainer announced he is backing off Tiz the Truth and pointing for a Summer or Fall campaign instead// The list of late Triple Crown nominations were announced Monday, with recent Spiral Stakes (G3) winner Black Onyx headlining the additions.  Among the notable exceptions were Show Some Magic, currently #25 on the leaderboard, and El Camino Real (G3) winner Dice Flavor. A full list can be found below// Speaking of Dice Flavor, he’s set to race in the UAE Derby Saturday in Dubai along with Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up He’s Had Enough and others// The Kentucky Derby trophy arrived safely at Churchill Downs today, so you can breathe a sigh or relief// more…

CTD Analysis: Surely it’s sickening for other trainers to see the number of serious Bob Baffert Derby prospects increase on a seemingly daily basis. While his Southern California export operation took a little bump in the road in last week’s Rebel Stakes, it was back on track with Govenor Charlie for Sunday’s Sunland Derby (G3). The son of Midnight Lute was close to the pace in the first half mile before displaying his true class in the latter stages by pulling away to an easy 5-length score.

One point of annoyance that I feel must be stated (again): Can we agree that any quarter mile time that begins with 22 seconds (followed by whatever) and any half mile in 46 (followed by whatever) for a race over a mile should not be called “modest”? In fact it’s quick, especially for a 1 1/8 mile race. I’m not sure what’s happened over the last several years but there is no uniformity in race calling or reporting when it comes to pace.

With that out of the way, it’s impressive Govenor Charlie could sit just behind the hot pace set by Saint Prado and have more than enough to dominate the race. I was surprised to see the Beyer Speed figure come back only 95 considering he set a Sunland Park record, but the track was playing fast all day. The Sunland Derby field was not ultra impressive on paper either, with only three entrants having won a race other than a maiden, and none of those races longer than a mile.

Still, Govenor Charlie should be a solid mid-to-upper tier choice in the Kentucky Derby (G1) based on his connections, speed figures, proven ability, and pedigree (second dam is Silverbulletday, a Grade 1 winner at 1 1/4 miles among other notable accomplishments).

Spiral Stakes (G3)
Winner (pts): Black Onyx

Chart: Equibase
Replay: YouTube
Beyer/BRIS: 90/96
Recaps: Bloodhorse / DRF / Brisnet
CTD Analysis: While the Sunland Derby winner could end up on a lot of Derby tickets, it’s hard to see the same happening for the Spiral Stakes (G3) winner Black Onyx. Sent off at 15-1 odds, Black Onyx will enter the Derby sporting low speed figures and a lone stakes win that came on a synthetic track. Nonetheless, he should be respected for making a strong closing move in a modestly set pace and for holding off multiple stakes winner Uncaptured in the stretch. Although his only win on dirt was just a maiden, that 2 1/4 lengths victory and his closing running style could be enough to make me second guess leaving Black Onyx off some superfecta combinations.

Second place Uncaptured should not be written off either. Not only was the Spiral his first race in four months and the longest he’s ever gone, but he’s already made it known the Churchill surface suits him. Uncaptured’s 30 points for the Kentucky Derby might be enough to make the field regardless of how he does in the Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland.

Titletown Five will wait for La Derby// Will Take Charge may train up to Kentucky Derby// Spiral news and notes// more…

The Sunland Derby (G3) lost a headliner when it was announced Titletown Five, part owned by former Green Bay Packers quarterback and Churchill Downs regular Paul Hornung, will wait for the Louisiana Derby (G2) March 30. Reasons given were spacing of the race and the fact Derby points are double. The connections will be without the riding services of Gary Stevens who will be in Dubai. Trainer Kenny McPeek thinks he’s best on turf, but makes no bones about having Derby fever// Buried in an article about Oxbow heading to the Arkansas Derby, which is not really breaking news, there was a mention that D. Florida Derby attracts attention, Spiral attracts horses// Monday workouts// Updated future odds// Revised CTD Top 5// more

In recent years the Florida Derby (G1) seems to attract a lot of press well in advance of its running. With about two weeks and three key Kentucky Derby point races before the Gulfstream Park signature race, Florida Derby related articles dominated headlines Monday. Merit Man joined the probable list, Orb breezed a strong four furlongs at Payson Park, and Brian Zipse thinks the race will “rock”. In addition to Orb and Merit Man, the other three probables in the likely short field include 2-year-old Champion Shanghai Bobby, Holy Bull (G3) winner Itsmyluckyday, and Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) runner-up Frac Daddy. While Merit Man’s trainer Bob Hess Jr. admitted the colt is probably best at sprint distances, he divulged the strategy in the Florida Derby will be to take advantage of the speed bias at Gulfstream and steal the race on the front end. If that wasn’t obvious to the competition before, now they definitely know// While the Florida Derby may be the darling of the press, the Spiral (G3) at Turfway is the popular choice for horsemen who hold Derby dreams. As many as 16 contenders are pointing for the race, although 12 is the maximum capacity allowed. Kentucky Derby winning trainer Graham Motion has two of the four colts that could be shut out due to insufficient earnings. A full list of probables can be found in the article linked below// Dice Flavor, upset winner of the El Camino Real (G3) at Golden Gate will ship to Dubai for the UAE Derby (G2). That’s usually the wrong way to go when trying to get to Louisville, but trainer Paddy Gallagher’s thinking is to keep the son of Scat Daddy on the Tapeta racing surface// Bob Baffert announced Super Ninety Nine, who failed as the favorite in Saturday’s Rebel (G2), will race next in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) against stablemate Flashback. It’s an interesting choice seeing as both prefer to stay up front in the early going. Garret Gomez was aboard Flashback for the first time Monday morning when the colt worked four furlongs at Santa Anita. Baffert also mentioned Friday allowance winner War Academy will try the Arkansas Derby (G1) or Blue Grass (G1) April 13, Power Broker could return to racing as soon as early April in the Santa Anita Derby or Wood Memorial (G1), and Code West is Louisiana Derby (G2) bound. The trainer will also send out Govenor Charlie and Shakin It Up to Sunland Park for the Sunland Derby (G3) this Sunday// Updated future odds from Wynn Las Vegas and William Hill linked below and as always on the sidebar// I updated the CTD Top 5 by dropping Super Ninety Nine (who I’m not giving up on completely) and adding War Academy into the mix. Yes, it’s a flavor of the week type pick, but I’m not real impressed with any horse outside the top three and I feel War Academy has a lot of upside// more…
